What is the Project?

Ask for Angela is a customer safety campaign, which has been widely adopted across the UK. Many Cambridge venues support the scheme (look out for posters in toilets and public areas) and their staff have been trained to respond in the appropriate way.

Ask for Angela means a customer can 'ask' a staff member for Angela (a code word they’re trained to recognise) if they feel unsafe, and expect to be supported discreetly with next steps, e.g. taking them to a safe space, helping them locate friends, further interventions if necessary.

Who does it benefit?

The Ask for Angela campaign is most relevant for night-time economy businesses (pubs, bars, clubs, music venues) but there is definitely benefit in other industries like restaurants and hotels showing their commitment to customers. The Purple Flag Partnership champions the value of the campaign and is keen to involve the whole city in safer nights out for all residents and visitors.

Get involved:

The crucial aspect of Ask for Angela is that all customer-facing staff in a venue should be aware of the campaign, and know how to respond if a customer asks.

Staff in your business can receive Ask for Angela training by attending one of our annual Welfare & Vulnerability Engagement (WAVE) events (delivered by Safer Sounds, part of the Safer Business Network).

Cambridge BID often has supplies of posters and will gladly supply them to venues who have demonstrated commitment to the Ask for Angela campaign, e.g. by attending our training.
