Professionally trained guardians on duty during key dates throughout the year, dedicated to ensuring Cambridge’s open spaces are safe and welcoming for all. The Open Space Guardians monitor activity, manage crowds, and support vulnerable individuals, enhancing the enjoyment and safety of public spaces for residents and visitors alike.
What is the project:
The Open Space Guardians initiative, delivered in partnership with Cambridge Business Against Crime (CAMBAC)and originally funded through Safer Streets 5, places professionally trained guardians in key open spaces across Cambridge during peak times. This includes weekends, bank holidays, and major city events.
The Guardians help maintain a safe and welcoming environment by monitoring activity and offering assistance to anyone who needs it. Equipped with CAMBAC radios, they are fully connected to venues, CCTV, venues within the City, and wider support networks across the City. Their role includes providing wayfinding, supporting individuals and monitoring open spaces.
Who does it benefit:
The project benefits all who use Cambridge’s open spaces visitors, residents, businesses, and event organisers by helping to create a safer, more respectful, and better-managed environment during busy periods.
Project Status:
The Open Space Guardians project was funded through Safer Streets 5 until 31 March. It remains an active initiative pending additional funding, and will continue to be deployed on weekends, bank holidays, and other strategically chosen dates as resources allow. Updates will be provided here as future funding is secured.
