Supporting Student Safety, Awareness and Engagement Across Cambridge
Students are a vital part of Cambridge’s community, and Purple Flag plays an important role in ensuring they feel safe, informed and welcomed as they explore the city. Working closely with the University of Cambridge, Anglia Ruskin University (ARU), and other local learning establishments, we provide resources, initiatives and engagement opportunities designed to support students throughout the academic year.
What is the project?
A city-wide initiative that works with universities, colleges and student unions to help students feel safe, informed and supported in Cambridge’s day-time and night-time economy. Through events, resources and on-campus engagement, the project promotes key safety schemes and introduces students to the city.

Purple Flag at Fresher Fairs: Promoting Safety, Inclusion & Vibrancy
Each year, Cambridge BID and CAMBAC under the project Purple Flag attend the major Fresher Fairs and Welcome Back Fairs across the city. These events allow us to introduce students to Cambridge’s safety initiatives, its vibrant night-time economy, and the support available to them as they settle into university life.
What We Provide at Fresher Fairs
Engagement with New Students
We meet thousands of incoming students, offering guidance on the safest ways to enjoy the city—whether they’re socialising, shopping, or navigating the night-time economy.
Safety Awareness
We highlight key schemes such as Ask for Angela, Taxi Marshals, Open Space Guardians, Business Against Abuse (BAA), NightLite, safe routes home and more—helping students understand the support network available in Cambridge.
Resources & Information
We hand out materials and speak directly with students about:
How to access help if they feel unsafe
Staying connected to night-time safety initiatives
Enjoying Cambridge responsibly and confidently
Support for Businesses
Attendance at the fairs also helps local businesses engage with students, promoting responsible drinking, inclusivity, and their own safety commitments as part of Cambridge’s Purple Flag accreditation.
